Our history

“Once upon a time…” – This is the beginning of many adventures, and such an adventure tempted to tell, when describing Vikima Seed’s history.

About Vikima Seed

It was a Wednesday afternoon in May, back in 1983, when Vikima Seed was established, in a small office in Holbaek, Denmark. Manfred Johannsen, who decided to start by himself, was the original founder.

It did not take long before Palle Sørensen and Jens Davidsen also became partners of the newly established seed company Vikima Seed. The were all former colleagues of the seed company Ohlsens Enke.

All three were in possession of various skills which gave the right synergy that could develop a newly established seed company. With increasing demand from customers, Vikima Seed had to invest in new and advanced cleaning machines and suitable facilities, and when the opportunity came across in Holeby on Lolland, it became a reality.

In 1990 Vikima Seed established a new base in Holeby.

Better Seed Quality

The success was inevitable and the the early 1990’s an new building was almost build every year. We established our own seed laboratory and better drying facilities, all because we knew the importance of providing vegetable seed of the highest quality. We also invested in more cleaning machines, and purchased our first colour sorting machine.

Vikima Seed has always had high ambitions, and therefore we established Vikima France close to Toulouse in the SW of France. This area has long tradition in vegetable seed multiplication, and gave ability to meet with customers requirements for other crops too.

Similarly, we started up in Washington state near Burlington. This area, Skagit Valley, is known for its production of vegetable seed, like hybrid spinach, hybrid cabbage, radish, beet, chard etc.
